This is a serious post. When the cafe kitchen was being finished, I got updated fire extinguishers. Not just red ones, a giant silver one for the kitchen. Did you know kitchen fires need different sprays? The technician gave me info. NO water on grease fires. Baking soda or salt. I didnt think Id ever need advice on this... Well.... The small pan of butter on the electric stove(I melt butter to glaze the quiche with) caught on fire! This pan was a very thin metal. Hmmm... I turned off the burner. Didnt say a peep. You couldve heard a pin drop. I didnt want to leave it on the stove burning so I slowly moved it to the.... Gasp..... Sink. As I lowered it, the flaming butter hit the water in the pots in the sink, splashed flames in the sink, up the wall, across the floor AND the countertop! Ever see a movie where the flames are suddenly everywhere??????? Fortunately, they went out as fast as they started. I carried the burning pan through the cafe & outside to the freezing pavement. You see, there was NO safe place to put the pan down. The kitchen has two doorways so I could have gone around & grabbed the fire extinguisher & put out the flames if they didnt immediately go out. And there are a few things Id like to sum this up with... Educate yourself about house fires/kitchen fires. People are harmed or die because we use the WRONG things to put out fires & make it WORSE. When in doubt, run away & call for help. If I thought I couldnt handle it, I definitely would have run two doors down to the polIce. Stay calm, as calm as you can. Had I freaked out, the building & the people in the apts upstairs could have been toasted! I clean the burners often because butter & oil can seep inside the pans below the eletric burners! Safety is paramount & protecting myself & the cafe & the tenants? Very important. So just in case youre wondering: keep fire extinguishers at home & work. Be educated on what puts out what fires~ nothing is worth getting hurt or dying over with fire!!!!! Country Girl Cafe( & I) want to insure others safety by using this experience as a true reminder of fire safety!!! :)
