This is a strikingly hypnotic piece of work, thats for sure, but couldnt Ms McLellan at least have found a couple of black womens faces to throw into the mix? You may say that there arent that many black female portraits in Western art but, trust me, there are enough. OK, so maybe Ms McLellan lack of sensitivity isnt the real issue here (being politically corrected was understandably not at the forefront of her mind when she assembled this film). What we should really be ruminating upon is what this film inadvertently does - it acts as a stark reminder of a thousand or more years of high culture in which the beauty of the black face has gone ignored/unacknowledged. Anyway, just a thought.
