This is a superb Video of our unique Birdlife here in NZ! Thanks to Neil Harraway and NHNZ for a brilliant overview! We are honoured to be able take you to visit a DOC Nature Reserve Island to view a flightless bird that became extinct on Mainland NZ in 1920. Fortunately, just 12 of these birds were taken to a remote group of islands 680km offshore to breed over 100 years ago, (where they have thrived) or this particular Weka species would be extinct. In 2004, 30 of these Buff Weka were liberated on predator free Mou Waho Island, 16 km up Lake Wanaka. they also have thrived, estimates of 150- 200 weka now make this island paradise with its lake on top their home. This is this only place on Mainland NZ that you will see thes birds in large numbers in their natural enviroment - And you will! as they are Ecologically Naive i.e. REALLY nosey! - (Their extinction downfall with predators on the Mainland.) Check our website for Images and Video footage of these comical birds on ecowanaka.co.nz Our unique Plant-a-native-tree relationship with DOC on every trip is a Win-Win situation for all concerned- 1/ The birds are already eating the produce of these trees. 2/ You get a chance to Give back to NZs environment on your trip to this magic island. 3/ Eco Wanaka Adventures leaves this island in better condition than when we arrived. A nice company policy for future generations! #NZmustdo #lovewanaka #nzwintermagic #Gigatownwanaka #nerdalert
