This is a surviving druidic animal sacrifice ritual, nothing less. The Wren Song played by the Clancy Brothers On St. Stephens day, the day after Christmas in the west of Ireland there is a tradition called the Wren Parade. Its specific to Gaelic traditional culture today and it involves people dressing up and chasing a symbol of the wren through town in a parade. The clancy brothers mention what it was like in the past, the dressing up involved painting peoples faces black and killing an actual wren then going door to door singing the song here to get cash from people for the wrens funeral. While its a tradition in ethnically Gaelic areas the wren parade began as an anglo norman tradition. And its only one of many norman traditions on St. Stephens day celebrated by our indigenous culture.
