This is a teeny blooper, but I LOVE this, because it demonstrates the power of positive reinforcement training. Here, Santana is a little to exuberant with his behavior and he bumps into me. Some people would view this as a respect issue and give a correction. I am simply reminding him that while he has the freedom to offer this behavior, I just let him know he will not be rewarded for what he did. Watch his lip twitch a bit as if talking to himself and the determination to SELF correct and settle into a solid stand right at my shoulder. When I watched this video I was struck at how when his side bumps me, he does not startle or kick at me. He did go through a period where he loved the game and was really eager, so he would bump me and then go crazy kicking as if I was on the attack. No one will ever know what his reason was. He does have several scars on his body that indicate he definitely was attacked by some animal. But now, we have so much better relationship that he clearly is comfortable. It has taken a very long time and a ton of work helping him feel comfortable with me handling him on all parts of his body.
