This is a thank you message and a study in cause and effect. Hipolito Munoz told me about Carlito Machete, whos a writer for HBOs The Leftovers series, who also gives writing workshops to kids in public schools, like Santa Ana, with LIFIs youth program. I couldnt find out how to watch The Leftovers, so Polo told me to look at HBO Go. I added it to my Directv, and as a result, just checked out Foo Fighters documentary series, Sonic Highways. Foo Fighters go into a town to record a song, and document parts of the town and its musical history. I watched about an hour about Chicago, Buddy Guy, and the punk rock scene in Chicago before, at the end of the documentary, I heard the song, Something from Nothing. https://youtube/watch?v=V_YlZ1JdcVk Maybe Im just having a moment, but this is the first time Ive been moved by a rock song in about twenty years. The lyrics have quotes from the interviews with Buddy Guy and you feel the spirit of generosity of the producer Steve Albini, and you feel the, dare I say it (since Ive never been there before), spirit of Chicago. So, thank you, Polo and Carlito: without you and without your investment in our youth, I would have never had my faith in rock music restored, and by one of my favorite bands, Foo Fighters.
