This is a tough lesson in forest management and you should see - TopicsExpress

This is a tough lesson in forest management and you should see this video. On our return from the eastern Sierra this week we traveled through the back country of the Sequoia National Forest near the Golden Trout Wilderness (Kennedy Meadow, Sherman Pass). You should know that this is *forest* land. It is not the lower elevation chaparral as much of it may appear in the video. The footprint of at least two large forest fires has completely changed the area. I did drive through a few pockets of what appeared to be forest but I stress *few* and *pockets.* The #fail? As a hippy-like liberal I felt convicted by the need for selective logging of some sort. Had there been a reasonable policy of harvesting, at least the harvested logs would have been put to use. There may have even been a smaller fire footprint as well with reduced fuel. After the fires there have been environmental suits to keep from logging the aftermath and so the dead trees just sit there as monuments to the current legislation that governs the Sequoia National Forest. I do not know what kind of policy the forest needs but I do know for sure that we need policy change. I would also add that future policy-makers and environmental critics take a drive through this part of the forest. In fact, I invite them to stay at an historic brothel below it at 3500 feet and well do a road trip. It can best be described as Apocalyptic. -- Amanda
