This is a unique and beautiful sound object containing valuable lessons. The oral tradition of Africa blended with European sacred music to produce Spirituals, Gospel music and begat the secular music of Ray Charles, carried here in spirit as well as sound by a young musical genius. The simplicity of the spare orchestration focuses the meaning, a technique which Winwood perpetuates through his career of distinctly original writing rife with multiple traditional influences. No amount of electronics can replicate the depth of physical sound generation controlled directly by fingers and lips. The gears of the Hammond Organ make every harmonic just ratios. The timing and drawbars access a world of subtlety and nuance, and the non-linearities of the magnetic interactions are too complex to model perfectly.
