This is a very Good Question Indeed. Over the years as I have studied the films and comparison Fights of George Foreman and Ernie Shavers, and this is a hard call when it comes to Boxings all Time Hardest punchers. But when it comes down to just these two Greats I have to share my opinion. How does one look at George Foremans presence in Boxing, it has to come in two different eras. Once when he totally walked through all the Top Contenders and destroyed, Joe Frazier twice with his power, and when he returned and put to sleep Gerry Cooney, and Michael Moorer in his 40s. Earnie Shavers rose to Title Contention when he stopped former Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis with his tremendous Right Hand that he could slip in as a sneaky inside uppercut off his Right Hand, and that Right Hand of Earnie Shavers could knockout anything it hit. But lets more carefully dissect WHY I choose George Foreman over Earnie Shavers. Earnie like Joe Frazier was more of a one dimensional puncher, with Joe Frazier it was his Left Hook, and with Shavers it was his Right Hand. Oh dont get me wrong Shavers was sneaky and quicker than one would think in explosive power, but it was his Right Hand that was one of the deadliest Single Punches in the History of Boxing. Foreman stopped Joe Frazier, Kenny Norton, Gerry Cooney and Michael Moorer in a different eras with power from both sides of the spectrum. Foreman was equally powerful with his Left Hook and Right Hand, and he could take you out with either one. Shavers stops Norton so does Foreman, Shavers puts down Larry Holmes in his prime, but cannot handle Larrys Boxing Skills nor Alis. Jerry Quarry comes out of no where and stops Shavers in the first round before Shavers can get out of the gate. I guess the bout that really seals my decision on this Topic is the Great Battle between Ron Lyle and George Forman. Both of these Greats fought Lyle and although Shavers put Lyle down early, he got counted out face down from Lyles power in the end. George Foreman on the other hand was able to withstand Ron Lyles Power and refused to give up and floored Lyle with both of his power sides the Left Hook and Right Hand. I know this is a question we all can argue until time immemorial, and I dont see how one could leave out Mike Tyson on this category, because Tyson could stop you with either hand equally as well, but thats another argument in and of itself when it comes to Boxings all Time Hardest Punchers. But as far as these two Greats Foreman vs Shavers who never met in the Ring, My vote would have to give the Edge to Big George Foreman.
