This is a very important and much-needed legislation. As a veterinarian, I have seen the ill effects of declawing on cats, which range from house-soiling behaviors due to pain and consequent inability to use the litterboxes to outright biting since theyve lost their primary defenses - a true public health problem. The incidence of biting is much more common amongst cats who have had their claws removed. It should be noted that declawing is actually an amputation of the digits of a cats toes. Its comparable to a human having the fingers amputated at the last joint, except that cats bear their weight on their toes. Its a cruel procedure which has no place in a civilized society. If someone cant learn to live in harmony with a cat who has claws, they should not have a cat as a pet.
