This is a very important read, mostly for the purpose of rethinking how you spend your time and money, and why. I do think that they author goes too far in describing things as the intentional design of some greedy businessmen (and doesnt even mention the role of government). I do agree that some folks have a lot of interest in keeping this disaster rolling. I do look around and think things are AS IF a few folks intentionally designed it so that they could profit off of the fact that so many people are unhealthy and unhappy. But I think its simply an emergent phenomenon. Its the unfortunate product of countless decisions made by countless individuals; I dont think its anything close to a conspiracy. In any case, it doesnt do much good to complain and point fingers. It doesnt matter how we got here. But what does matter is that we still have enough freedom to take control of our lives and improve them. Are you unhappy? Quit your stinkin job. Stop wasting your money on cheap goods and fast food and expensive coffee drinks. Turn off the news. Stop watching trash television and paying attention to other mind-numbing distractions. Ditch those losers who are dragging you down and make some new friends. Go for a walk. Join a book club. Draw a picture. Journal. Learn a new skill. Get a good night of sleep. If you live in the west, no corporation or government can stop you from taking these steps to improve your life. Its on you. And it all can start, simply, by taking a step back and surveying where you are right now. If you dont like it, start planning the next chapter. And before you get all defensive, Im not casting stones here. I wrote those words more for myself than for any of you people.
