This is a very messy article and I notice that we are not being told one certain useful thing that we really could stand to know: to whom exactly did Snowden give those files? China? Russia? Both? Neither? We are being kept in the dark about just who he gave the files to. There is some shit-disturbing about Al Qaeda, but where did Al Qaeda supposedly get this information? Or did they just get a generalization: do or dont use this or that system. If that was all they are acting on, then do we know where they got that information? Would you tell us please? What is the connection between Al Qaeda and their source? The reporter writes The drop in message traffic after the communication intercepts contrasts with what analysts describe as a far more muted impact on counterterrorism efforts from the disclosures by Mr. Snowden of the broad capabilities of N.S.A. surveillance programs. This is a comparison between two intelligence problems that the writer does more to confuse than explain. And, his statement seems to compare the Snowden fallout with Al Qaeda as though these could be calculated statistically. Just how can such a strange comparison be made? If the Al Qaeda plot is to take out some US cities, just say so. Then, yes, of course, that would be worse. The journalist is whipping a raw statement to the effect that Al Qaeda is doing something worse than what Snowden did into a frenzy without making clear what if any real connection there is. In short, this is a scare article - it is media terrorism. The New York Times usually publishes much better articles than this.
