This is a very worthwhile conservation project, and one that can really spark the interest of children in science. Central Kentucky used to have a tremendous population of monarch butterflies, and lots of milkweed. In the last few years, I honestly cant remember seeing more than a few monarchs. I really hadnt thought about this until one of my nephews was reading a book about insects and he became very excited about raising butterflies, and wanted to know where he could find milkweed. All the places I knew from my childhood that had milkweed were gone. The only thing that had grown on that farmland in a decade had been houses. We can change that, help rescue the lookalike to our state butterfly (the viceroy), and we can make this an educational project this at the same time. (RB)
