This is a wonderful story and I am aware of what it feels like to leave your children behind and hope and pray you will make it back. Many military families thank soldiers for their service and often do little things for each other such as picking up the check at a restaurant for a military family or offer to babysit the children so the parents can have a night out alone, etc. Many non-military people dont feel comfortable or understand how to demonstrate their appreciation. Just saying Thank You is a tremendous means of uplifting any soldiers morale. Last week, I was having lunch in a near by sports bar and was wearing my Vietnam Veteran hat. As I finished my meal I asked the young lady for the check. She smiled at me and said its already taken care of. I am an Old Soldier, having served in Vietnam, Thailand, on active duty, and Iraq and Afghanistan as a contractor. I didnt expect this and was emotionally moved. I didntt know who took care of my check as I wanted to thank them. I sat there pondering this over for a minute and a complete stranger walked behind me and laid his hand upon my shoulder. He didnt stop, didnt speak but he didnt have to. I had observed two soldiers in uniform enter the establishment a few minutes earlier. I asked the young lady taking care of them to bring me their check. She smiled and said thank you to me which I was startled by her comment as she was not military and certainly didnt have to thank me. I paid the check and as they say Paid it Forward. Always take the opportunity to thank a veteran. It is what it is!
