This is about our famous Overland guest, Daniel Boone. He was buried on a hillside he personally chose just outside of Marthasville in 1820. After a contentious proceeding regarding the removal of his remains to Kentucky, his body was exhumed for the trip back in 1845. At that time they discovered his coffin had deteriorated and all that was left was bones. In 1985 the historian John Mack Faragher wrote a book about Daniel Boone, and went on tour promoting his book. I attended a lecture he gave at the Missouri Historical Society. During the lecture he referred to the Boone Family gravesite as a burial ground with bodies basically buried one on top of the other. An interesting occurrence during the question and answer period of the presentation was an older gentleman raging at Faragher for his thoughts on why Kentucky stole Boones body from Missouri! - obviously still a sore spot for some people. Unfortunately I did not think about asking Faragher for his thoughts about the Boone cabin in Overland. In 2012 ground penetrating radar was used to determine the number and position of graves at the Boone Cemetary. Results showed that Faragher s assumption about disorderly internments was not entirely accurate. The picture I included was the results of the scan. To Jack Lois Arnold and anyone else interested I would recommend the Friends of the Daniel Boone Burial Site in Missouri, they post interesting info about Boone from time to time. When questioned about how much of Boones body actually was returned to Kentucky, an official accurately observed that most of his large bones were taken back, but his brain and heart remain in Missouri.
