This is absolutely infuriating. The more that time passes it really seems more evident that Gove is just an idiot, albeit an idiot whos waging an ideological war on our education system. Cutting out novels like To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men from the GCSE syllabus in favour of more Dickens and Austen isnt going to inspire our 14-16 year old children with Goves outdated ideals of great British literature, its going to bore them. The great thing about Steinbeck, Lee and Miller and other such 20th Century American novelists is that as well as writing brilliant, moving novels/plays they write them in a very accessible way. I dont mean to patronise anyone here, but I feel like most GCSE English literature pupils will be able to engage more readily with the likes of Of Mice and Men than Great Expectations or Sense and Sensibility. I know I did at that time and still do. I dont think I could get through a Dickens novel at 14 and Ive ended up studying literature for a degree.
