This is advertising but Im risking it as the topic is very relevant. Its a note for the councils internal staff network that I reproduce below. Anyone on here who might like a copy...follow the instructions, please! QUOTE: Bernard Lewis, former Principal Administrative Assistant in the Environment Department, is about to see his fourth local history book published. Bernard, who took early retirement in December 2009, commented that his forthcoming book Swansea in the Great War is the result of over a year of research in local and international archives, as well as in the press of the time. Information was also received from relatives of a number of those who were involved in the war, whether at home or on the front lines. Bernard added The book is not just concerned with the fighting. Indeed, though the actions of both of the Swansea Victoria Cross winners are recounted as well as the experiences of some who served on land, at sea or in the air, how the war affected other aspects of Swansea life are also covered in detail. There are chapters on recruitment and conscientious objection, on enemy aliens interned in the town and Belgian refugees, on food shortages, on the effect of the war on industry, on how wounded soldiers were cared for in the town and on the changing role of women in Swansea. The book will be officially launched at the Civic Centre on 22 October 2014 by the Lord Mayor and the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan and Bernard will be selling copies at the Civic Centre Foyer at a discounted price (£10 instead of £12.99) from 13.15 until 16.30 on the day. He asks that staff members who intend taking advantage of this offer contact him as soon as possible (at bernard.lewis1952@gmail) so that he can reserve books for the day. He will also be selling copies at the Swansea Local History Book Fair on Saturday 25 October 2014 at Swansea Museum between 10.00 and 16.00. Again, it is recommended that anyone interested in buying a copy contacts Bernard as soon as possible so that books can be reserved.
