This is an amazing post from Philip Wuntch - Please read ! MEMORIES OF ROBIN WILLIAMS Referring to entertainers, the word beloved is used as freely as legendary. But Robin Williams genuinely was beloved. And legendary. Fans of all ages mourned His tragic, unexpected death. Even when playing dark roles, as he frequently did during his final 15 years, he seemed like a good friend to everyone. At least two examples give credence to that image. When his onetime roommate and longtime friend Christopher Reeve faced death, Williams consistently offered moral support, even paying his hospital bills when the end was imminent. And when Steven Spielberg was filming Schindlers List and felt overwhelmed by the painful subject matter, he placed nightly phone calls to Williams just to hear his jokes. Apparently Williams could curb anyones depression except, finally, his own. His accomplishments were many. He was one of the first television superstars to become a big-screen superstar, and when the star of TVs Mork and Mindy was cast in the movie version of The World According to Garp, many publications couldnt resist the banner headline MORK AS GARP. He also gracefully made the leap from comedic to dramatic roles. I interviewed him on at least three occasions and found him in various moods. He knew Club Paradise would flop and was distant, distracted and, yes, despondent. He knew Good Morning, Vietnam was a smash and was ebullient, giving full reign to his rascally sense of humor. He knew Spielbergs Hook was a toss-up and cagily tried to steer the conversation away from the Peter Pan adventure. Youve probably seen his major successes. I hope youll catch up with at least three lesser-known efforts -- Danny DeVitos wicked satire Death to Smoochie with Edward Norton, Christopher Nolans chilly thriller Insomnia with Al Pacino and Hilary Swank and the uneven but sometimes startling One Hour Photo, in which he poignantly depicted desperate loneliness. But probably Williams will be remembered for his comedy, which could cure anyones desperation and loneliness. Well, almost anyones. There remains one heart-wrenching exception.
