If theyre involved in a questionable incident, they get a paid vacation without any requirement for additional training. At no time are they required to begin paying even a portion of their own professional liability insurance premiums, not even after they are found to have been fault. Money for the settlements comes from a self-insured liability fund maintained by the department that currently has about $17 million in it. The fund pays for liabilities ranging from eyeglasses officers break while on duty to the million-dollar legal settlements.
