This is an example of how an issue that should never be turned into a political issue is turned into an ugly political issue. Both sides are guilty of turning a crisis into a political football. Even as a member of the Republican Party, I recognize that a secured border would not prevent what is happening on our border with Mexico...young children walking up the border seeking refuge. Lets hope that some wisdom is demonstrated in this crisis that results in the thousands of children being safely cared for until they can be returned to their families and respective countries. Let us also hope that the children who present themselves with evidence of abuse are cared for. The border does need to be secured. An expensive fence that will not keep people from illegally entering our nation will not by itself secure the border. Other active measures need to be taken, e.g. Dept. of Homeland Security funding for dedicated state police and DPS border security divisions that work and cooperate with the U.S. Border Patrol, ground based radar that allows for active monitoring of the most likely crossing points, drones, helicopters and light aircraft patrolling the border, Quick Reaction Border Patrol Units that can respond quickly to an illegal crossing while the persons illegally entering our nation are tracked by drone or aircraft, and etc. But as we secure our border, we cannot forget that we do need to show compassion to those who prove that they are escaping tyranny, death, and/or abuse.
