This is an exceptional museum built over a former navy dry dock into which the Royal Flagship Vasa has been placed in a modern building. It is best to go early, as the museum is popular with guided tours. The vessel can be viewed from five floors connected by generous stairways and a huge elevator. The state of preservation is quite remarkable and exhibits on the various floors give the background history of the vessel and the period when it was built. Above all the vessel is quite massive -imagine a four or five storey house in height. Keen photographers should note that light levels in the museum are deliberately muted so high ISO settings are needed, as all but the most heavy-duty professional flash gear will not do justice to such a huge vessel. The cafe/restaurant within the museum (there is no external entrance) is excellent and provides a range of options from coffee and cakes up to a full meal. Note that this gets very busy around lunch time so early diners have a more relaxed experience! There is a good museum shop too. Visited May 2013
