This is an excerpt from An oil experts take on this proposal and why he is against it (I believe the author is a petroleum engineering student): On the specifics of this proposal: Finally, there are a few issues specifically about this well that strongly concern me. The first is its location. The ground is low-lying, within immediate proximity of Lake Hefner’s water table, and on a protected community green space where both citizens and wildlife enjoy being. It takes very little leakage to contaminate a water supply and the path of movement from the sight of leakage to the lake would be fairly rapid in this specific case. Secondly, the disturbances associated with drilling (24/7 flood lights, noise, and frequent trucking) would be an unavoidable and unwanted disturbance to the community. Conclusion: We should not drill for two reasons, the first is factual and the second is my opinion. 1) We have a situation where the likelihood of contamination is very low, but the scope of the contamination would be so devastating that it should automatically preclude consideration of development. 2) If we were talking about a Walmart parking lot, the situation might be different, but the Lake Hefner trails are a protected and enjoyed green space within the city, and on that basis they should remain undeveloped for no reason more than the virtue of their sanctity. Summary: Fracking does not contaminate groundwater, poor cement jobs do contaminate groundwater but are extremely rare, fracking does not cause earthquakes, underground injection wells could possibly cause earthquakes but would not affect Lake Hefner, and drilling should not proceed on the basis that 1) the (highly improbable but nevertheless possible) community impacts are too devastating to be justified by the economic reward and 2) the protected green zone should remain a protected green zone. savelakehefner/an-oil-experts-take-on-this-proposal-why-he-is-against-it/
