This is an expanded version (more than doubled in length!) of a homily I recently gave at St. Alban’s parish in Hollywood. The lecture can be summarized as a plea for a reconsideration of the fairly common notion among many “esoteric” Christians that official membership in a religious body or a local parish is a matter of indifference or non-importance. I call for inquirers to re-consider the wonders of living the sacramental life and the powers bestowed by the church’s sacraments which enable baptized and confirmed Catholics (i.e. the initiated) to discover their true being-ness. The talk includes illustrations utilizing the symbolism of Jesus’ “Miracle of the Loaves” or Feeding of the Five Thousand, as well as Origen of Alexandria’s discussion of “Our Daily Bread.”
