This is an interesting video of the SuperStack. My father helped build it in 1970. However, remember this: It was to serve only as decade long interim solution to rid Sudbury of ground level emissions. In the1980s - advancements of sulphur and particulate scrubbing technologies were expected to be able to remove everything but water vapour. INCO and now Vale have committed significant efforts and resources to this cause and have made large strides with these technologies but I still call to report ground level plumes from time to time. 45 years later and an interim solution designed for a decade is still doing what it does. I know that some people view this stack as a landmark and part of our municipal identity but It has been implicated with causing a cancer and autoimmune disease blooms - among other things. Does residing in a liveable and sustainable city still mean living in the shadow of the superstack? Why do we refuse to talk about the pink elephants in the room? Imagine a Sudbury with an active mining industry but without the superstack. Imagine the effect on population increase, business attraction, expansion and retention. Sudbury tech and innovation drivers, researchers and industrial leaders, I CHALLENGE YOU to to deliver lower cost, easily applied solutions to rid ourselves of the emissions problem. If within a 60 year window, mankind can transition from first flight to walking on the moon, we should be able to solve this problem in short order. Make Sudbury known for a new global game-changing environmental contribution. We can do this. Lets do this! youtu.be/_aC2mhtT-Zo
