This is an op-ed I came across last night. I dont think its *quite* as cut and dry an issue as the author makes out, but I agree with him far more than I disagree. I *do* think its pretty shocking behavior that we are willing to accept non-disabled actors playing disabled without a second glance, but we will raise holy hell if, say, Anthony Hopkins plays Othello. The Daniel Day-Lewis comparison is a particularly apt one. We have a fairly expansive recent history in Hollywood of actors playing disabled to significant critical acclaim - even Oscars - and Im a little stunned it hasnt drawn a lot more audience criticism. The pity emotion really just overrides all else, doesnt it?
