This is an unfortunate event, but not true with all species of dog. A healthy dog that is acclimated to their own climate can chew ice/drink ice water. It is common for smaller breeds to throw up cold water (for ex: when you are hungover it is easier to keep down room temp h2o). Your body actually burns calories (works harder) when you drink ice cold water. This is also similar for people with long noses who are from northern descent. It takes more time to warm the air before it hits your lungs. Bigger breeds of dogs with thicker coats from colder climates can drink ice water. Think about wolves & wild/stray dogs on a winters day when everything is iced over. THEY HAVE TO EAT ICE TO SURVIVE. I am grateful for this warning, but just because it happens to some dogs doesnt mean it happens to all. If your dog is overheated I do not recommend ice water immediately. If your dog is not over heated & has always enjoyed ice cubes as a treat, unlike humans it IS beneficial to their teeth & gums.
