This is another one of the photographs Alexander Gardner took in the Lawrence area in 1867. The house, quite frankly, looks like a dump but it was the center of a land controversy between Jim Lane and Gaius Jenkins in 1858. Jenkins ultimately approached the house with some armed followers and Lane warned them off. Accounts state that one of Jenkins men fired, hitting Lane in the knee. Lane then returned fire killing Jenkins. A group of men gathered around the house, including former Sheriff Sam Jones, and threatened to lynch Lane. The current Sheriff reminded Jones that a lot of people in Lawrence wanted to lynch HIM for his role in the 1856 sack of Lawrence. Cooler heads prevailed. kansas/incoming/cpfl3n/picture863499/alternates/FREE_960/012911gardner
