This is beginning of a success story. This past July, over - TopicsExpress

This is beginning of a success story. This past July, over 1500 people across Nova Scotia showed up to public meetings for the hydraulic fracturing (fracking) review panel, and made it very clear that they don’t want to see fracking happen in this province. By coming out to meetings and showing they would accept nothing less than a moratorium, the people of Nova Scotia won a ban on fracking. On September 3, Andrew Younger announced that Nova Scotia will pass legislation to prohibit high volume hydraulic fracturing. His reasoning was that people in the province have made it clear they do not want it here. In addition, he cited not knowing enough about the risks of fracking to proceed safely at this time. But when it comes down to it, we know that fracking is a threat to the health of our communities, environment, water sources and climate. We know that the dangers of fracking extend beyond our local borders. The methane released into the atmosphere during the extraction process drives runaway climate change. We went out to meetings and demanded that our government listen to us and act in our best interest, not the interests of fossil fuel companies. And for once, they did. Nova Scotia showed what happens when communities come together and demand their right to a livable future. That said, with the possibility for legislation to include room for exploration (not to mention at all of coalbed methane or offshore drilling) it is more important than ever to stand together and show our government that we’re paying attention, and we aren’t going to settle. While it is necessary to take time to celebrate what we’ve accomplished, it’s part of a much bigger battle. This is the beginning of a success story, but it is far from being over. https://vimeo/106621464
