This is especially pernicious in small towns where the pastor is expected to fill a certain slot and do it quietly. Theres the Presbyterian slot, and the Methodist slot, etc. The worst insult I ever got, as far as I was concerned, and it happened more than once, was when I was introduced buy some little old lady to one of her friends as her little pastor. Some of the older ladies in the South, at least, still use that phrase. It always made me want to take her by the waddles and ask, Just how big do I have to be to get beyond this, girly? But of course, playing the game and being nice I smiled and said, Nice to meet you.
