This is especially poignant to me today, with the fresh image of a lost little girl in my head. Yesterday at a public pool event, in a crowd full of people I spotted a little girl crying, with that characteristic panicked look, wandering around. I immediately realized she was lost, so took her hand, and started talking with her, looking for her parents through the crowd. It took a really long time to get her to stop crying and tell me her moms name or her name so I could have official people find the mom. She held my hand, I won her trust over what seemed like way too long for her, and we finally found the mom who seemed clueless and barely fazed by the whole thing. The moment I got her to stop crying and laugh for a minute then tell me her name made my heart melt. The moment of seeing every tensed muscle in her tiny body relax into her mom at last...made me cry. And her terrified little face, little hand gripping mine for all that time is still with me. Broke my heart as I imagined my own kids not knowing where their people were. And all week Ive been thinking about this same idea, as my kids are back to school yet separated for the first time in 5 yrs. So yep... know where your people are.
