This is exactly how Sonny and I have been raising our boys! I dont give my children everything they ask for. I dont have a need for them to have the best of the best, i.e. My 14m old doesnt need a $50 coat from old navy (even though it was super cute), the $20 one that I just got him from walmart (and is as equally cute) is just fine and Im sure it keeps him just as warm as the old navy one would! I have told them that I dont want to play with them because, yes, I just want to watch some tv. I tell them when they are being brats and a pain in my butt and yes, Im sure Ive hurt their feelings. But I know that thats ok and they still love me! What we do do is teach them to have respect for everyone, different and alike. How to stick up for themselves and each other. That family and our God should always be #1. How what you wear and the things you have dont define you. That its ok to fail but its not ok to give up. I pray everyday that Im doing good by them. That I give them the skills to have to be successful in this crazy, not always cruel world. And we do all of these things because we love our boys and want what we believe is the best for them!
