This is from one of my devotional readings out of Our Daily Bread from 1997 that I saved and was tucked in my bible. I think I was going through a rough patch back then. Sometimes love hurts! Even though love can bring pain and sorrow, what would life be without it? In C. S. Lewis book The Four Loves (great book), he wrote: “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully around with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. . . . The only place outside heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers . . . of love is hell.” To love is to take risks, to expose our hearts. Sometimes it hurts! We must keep loving our significant other or spouse, children, neighbor, and co-worker. It is Christlike—and it’s better than locking our hearts in a coffin of self-centeredness. Thinking It over. How have you been hurt by those youve tried to love? Have you been tempted to withhold your love? How has someone shown patient love to you? Nothing costs as much as loving except not to love. Father, thank you for showing us your love through Christ...#rockystimewithgod
