This is from the government propaganda website, factually: Classification Its All About Choices Some may be under the misconception that the Media Development Authority (MDA) still has its ‘scissor hands’ on, but MDA has in fact moved away from censorship towards classification and co-regulation. This is to ensure that diverse audiences have greater access to a wide range of media choices without compromising on the need to protect young children from undesirable content. The ratings ploy, in my opinion, has always been a PR attempt to create the impression that the government does not exercise censorship in Singapore. (Part of the city-states international branding and the posturings of a neoliberal economy). I keep hearing, for example, authorities saying that it is the distributors who make cuts, and not the Board of Film Censors (in fact Amy Chua herself once remarked that the BFC should remove the word Censors and replace it with Classification). This is sneaky, because quite obviously the MDA/BFC itself has set up the censorship framework for all this to happen, while at the same time distancing themselves from the actual scissor hands. Lets not have something similar happen with the other art forms in Singapore. gov.sg/government/web/content/govsg/classic/factually/factually-02102012-itsallaboutchoices
