This is going to be a tricky post to write, but I think Im at the point that I need to address something. Several times a day Ill get a request to write about a certain secondary characters from different series, which is really cool, but in quite a bit of those cases, the email or post isnt so much a request but a compliant/rant about why I havent given one set of characters a book while Ive chosen to write about other characters/series, which isnt really warm and fuzzy. Some of these posts get pretty darn mean. Theyre not reviews. Theyre emails. Tweets. Posts on here. Posts on my website, and so on. Its really hard to address something like this, because while Im thrilled secondary characters mean a lot to some readers, I never thought that love would inspire such... well, not very nice things. The truth is, there isnt always a story for me to tell. And see, thats the most important thing for me. There needs to be a story to tell, one that Im excited about, and I have to want to tell it to give the reader the best possible story I can give. Writing about characters I dont have a story for isnt going to translate into a very good book and thats not something I want to produce. I think the readers deserve better than me producing something I dont feel passionate about. Theres a reason why I never wrote a full story about Brit and Ollie, because there is nothing for me to tell outside of what is already in the books and in their short story, and I never planned on doing even a short story for them. It was just something extra that I gave. I know that is disappointing, but I cant force something to happen. They are a happy couple in the JLA world of Wait for You, and they reappear throughout most of the books. But there was a story for me to tell when it came to Jax and Calla, Reece and Roxy, Steph and Nick, and Brock and, well, you havent met her yet. I completely understand that for some readers those above stories werent the one you were looking for and, you know thats okay, but that doesnt change that there was a story for me to tell about them, and that should also be okay. Timing and committments sometimes get in the way when it comes to extending series or branching off with secondary characters. Ive never outright said Id never tell a story about Luc or Archer, but the timing for that isnt happening right now. So please know that if I havent written about certain characters outside of the books they exist in, its either because there isnt a story for me to tell or I dont have the time necessary at the moment, and its not because Im trying to ruin a series or ignore the fans of a series. And who knows? Maybe one day there will be stories to tell about characters who have remained quiet, but until then, I have to listen to the ones who are talking to me right now. =D
