Steve Lawson: What is a disciple? It is very important for us here to know what a disciple is because it is ONLY a disciple that is in-line and following after Jesus Christ. A true disciple is a true believer in Jesus Christ. It is a Greek word that means a ‘learner’. It is one has come to sit at the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ and be taught by Him and become a follower of Jesus Christ. Matt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” Our Lord could care less about attenders- our Lord is after disciples. A disciple in these early chapters is a true believer. In fact the word ‘Christian’ was not even coined and used until much later Acts 11:26 and at that it was a term of derision that means a ‘little Christ’. (Luke 14:25-35) “25Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple 26If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple 28For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? 29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, 30saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish. 31Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.” What are the terms our Lord has issued for anyone in this building to take one step to following after Him? It is a free gift that He alone purchased on cavalry’s cross and He gives it to us without price- but He requires of us that we come to a place of total complete and radical submission and surrender of our lives to Him. Or according to our Lord’s words says “he cannot be my disciple” – Our Lord puts it in a negative to have more impact upon our hearts. As if holding up His hands and saying ‘You cannot be my followers unless you come to this place’. To come to the place that you are more than a mere attender…where you are more than simply in a crowd…where you actually become a TRUE BLOOD BOUGHT FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST.
