This is great news for Newcastle, hopefully more money is invested in the city over the next couple of years... NEWCASTLE’S building boom took no rest over the holiday period with a number of plans for new housing projects lodged with the city’s council. Six significant housing projects, worth almost $30million combined, are on public exhibition, with most planned for the city’s suburbs and fringe areas away from the central business district. At Islington, 40 apartments are planned for 52 Maitland Road. The $8.656million five-storey project features ground-floor commercial space, 15 one-bedroom and 25 two-bedroom apartments. At 6 Council Street in Wallsend, another five-storey mixed-use development is planned. The $7.025million project features ground-floor commercial space, 28 residential units and 50parking spaces. It comprises five one-bedroom, 20 two-bedroom and three three-bedroom apartments. At Mayfield, a $3.6million development of the historic police station and post office is planned as part of a broader development of 219-221 Maitland Road. The two buildings are heritage listed and will be restored to house apartments. On land surrounding them, a four-storey development containing 14 residential apartments is proposed. The former police station is known as the ‘‘sergeant’s residence’’ and has been vacant for many years. The old post office is currently home to a childcare centre. A $1.2million development is planned for 28 Marsden Street at Shortland. Under the plan, eight three-bedroom, two-storey units will be built on the 1145-square-metre site. Similarly, a $1.006million development is planned for 14-16 Moore Street at Birmingham Gardens. That plan comprises 10 two-bedroom townhouses. The flurry of applications has not been limited to residential developments. At Beresfield, a large industrial development is proposed for 27 Yilen Close. The $4.858million project forms stages three and four of a subdivision that comprises six new industrial tenancies. And at Cooks Hill, plans have been lodged for a $3.02million upgrade of the Cooks Hill Commercial Centre on Darby Street. The Newcastle Herald reported last year that the owner, Newcastle Grammar School, had formed a ‘‘partnership’’ between its iconic Howzat gym and the national fitness giant, Genesis Fitness Group. Most of the renovation plan is confined to the existing gym and indoor sports area. The application includes a plan to alter the centre’s operating hours.
