This is happening Waaaaaaaaaaaay too often. If they do not leave them inside , they leave them tied up outside or they simply put them on the street to try to survive. There was one such case right here in Lima and the dog is so very lucky that a man stepped up and brought her home until they could find her a home. When he took the dog home, the owners had moved away and left the dog behind as well as a duck in a cage where it could not even fend for itself. Beth Sheehan 8:00pm Jan 21 Ohio, please watch homes - possibly with animals still inside - that are abandoned in your neighborhood! This Richland County, Ohio woman abandoned her home with three dogs inside. Lets watch her case unfold. MOST animal cruelty in Ohio is a misdemeanor. The maximum sentence for a misdemeanor is 6 months in jail and $1,000 fine. Take note of the sentences for convicted animal abusers in Ohio. Most leave court with SUSPENDED (no jail) time and simply pay a fine. (An Ohio) owner left three dogs behind, abandoned in a home! One dog is dead, and two others are cold and near starvation. It’s a cruel, needless crime that investigators say is on the rise. Humane agents say when the owner of the dogs moved out of her Richland County house, she left them behind like unwanted furniture. You can see the love in their eyes. What you should never be able to see, are their bones poking through their skin. You see the ribs, you see the hips, you see the skin.” All are signs of starvation, according Richland County Humane Agent Missy Houghton. The dog she is talking about is an emaciated terrier mix named Kermit. He should probably weigh 20, 25 pounds. He weighs 12 now…. and weighed 9 when we got him Saturday, said Houghton. He was rescued Saturday along with a shepherd mix named Jenny. Houghton responded to the house on Willow Street in Mansfield on a tip. Some dogs got out of a house that was empty and the dogs looked like they were starving to death. Along with Kermit and Jenny, this miserable scene is what she found: There was no utilities to the house, the door was wide open. Walls were torn up. There was an empty bag of dog food and several bowls, but there was nothing with food in it. Two cold, starving dogs would be the best thing humane agents would find inside the house. At least they were alive. Inside, they found the carcass of a third dog, who they say suffered an agonizing death. When they did a necropsy on him, he had no food in his stomach and it looked like just particle board where he was chewing on the walls, and little pieces of plastic and chain and everything like that,” said Houghton, leading her to one conclusion. That he was so hungry that he just started to eat anything, to try to survive. Houghton says its an issue theyre seeing more of - people abandoning their properties, and the animals that depend on them for survival. After four days of food and care, Jenny and Kermit are showing signs of recovery. Houghton calls what was done to them needless, and inexcusable. You call somebody. You do something. You dont just leave them in there to die. Wednesday, the Richland County Humane Society located and made contact with the owner of these dogs. They say she will be charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. After a few weeks, they tell us Kermit and Jenny should be well enough to be put up for adoption. Right now in Ohio, animal cruelty is a misdemeanor. Like several other states - Ohio lawmakers are debating a measure that would make cruelty a felony in extreme cases. 10tv/content/stories/2015/01/21/mansfield-ohio-richland-county-woman-accused-of-abandoning-dogs-leading-1-to-die-of-starvation.html
