This is horrifying tale of kiruv gone wild. I have seen similar stories happen with my own eyes and heard about similar stories from the people involved. It happens. When it does happen, the pain is immense and the damage all around is immeasurable. Of course this does not happen all the time. Its pretty rare, in my experience. Most kiruv professionals are much more sensitive and responsible than the villain in this story. If it happened all the time, there would be hundreds of articles like this one. This personal reflection is the writers own experience. Yet, it feels like every other Orthodox Jewish commenter feels the need to say something like Nuh-uh, this doesnt really happen or Yah-but this doesnt happen anywhere else. We dont always need to play defense. I wish the most common comment by Orthodox Jewish readers was something like this: I am so sorry that this happened to you and your family. Your story is horrible and I am glad you shared it so that we can make sure this never happens again. Stay strong. Hopefully there will be a happy ending to your story and you will share it with us on Kveller. If youve commented on Kveller already, add another comment like this one. If you havent commented yet, consider it. A mother and grandmother is hurt and all we can manage is your story isnt true and even if it was true, it only happened to you. Sad.
