This is idiotic and I think reveals that there exists deep anxiety among progressives who live in Toronto. If this thesis holds true, it argues that average people cant understand progressive politics, that theyll always vote for low-hanging fruit cynically dangled in front of them by populist candidates. No, the NDP elites (which doesnt actually mean anything... no one can be more elite than Horwath, by definition) are not the target: the target is capital, money, the banks and neoliberalism. The strategy employed is where all this holds up or falls down... You want to court votes for people in the suburbs? Offer universal childcare, dont offer bribe-like policies that will save a few bucks off hydro. You want to court the votes for farmers? Offer a rural development strategy rather than wringing your hands that these are simple folk who only care about the most obvious day-to-day costs. The people in Toronto who elected Ford also elected Miller. The ONDP campaign smacks of people fearing that theyll be seen as so-called downtown elites and desperately trying to be average suburbanites. When you lose your political compass, youll risk running an incoherent campaign. nowtoronto/news/story.cfm?content=198333
