First, we need to acknowledge that its far from being an isolated case: there are instances recorded of entire villages in Italy being annihilated because they were run by communist partisans who declared political autonomy from the Italian state. So the question is - given the appalling disaster that is global capitalism, would the face and the future of Europe be different is some of the nations on this side of the Berlin Wall and the whole Soviet/Capitalist divide had become voluntarily communist. France nearly went that way, Italy, Greece the same. The countries east of the wall were occupied by Stalin and became Communist by default because he wanted the territory: it wasnt a voluntary communism.
