This is important to us so Please read until the end--We LOVE the town of Franklin. Let me tell you how much. Weve been a Franklin staple for 20 years. This September itll be 20 years actually Yay!! We remember when 140 was just our plaza, The Caravan restaurant, Vendettis and the Stop and Shop Plaza (and there was a movie theatre there! And the Zeotrope was in the Center! But I digress.) In a world where small businesses open and close. In fact we know that another corporate coffee chain is on its way into town but we know we might struggle but will carry on. And making bagels and everything from scratch is a tough job, but we carry on because we have THE BEST CUSTOMERS IN THE WORLD AND IN THE BEST TOWN!! You know our names and how we are related. Weve watched families get started and bloom. We know your kids, we have watched them grow up! We feel like we are a part of your lives. We value your feedback it gives us GREAT ideas on our handmade products! And if you know me you know this isnt BS, I always tell it like it is (like that creepy guy I have to kick out because he makes us all uncomfortable--you know who you are!! lol) But Im about to bring up a topic that is going to be unpopular. And before I do, just know that I am not a rule-breaker. We pay our taxes, license fees and donate to charity. We support this town. The new High School opens this Fall and its a new policy that no one can bring outside beverages/coffee into the new high school. The reason given was to preserve the school. Thats hilarious. There are items that are more damaging to a new school than a coffee, such as a permanent marker. Are those banned too? Nope. So maybe this is REALLY because Whitsons, the corporation that has a contract with Franklin Public schools and runs the cafeteria, has opened a brand new Cafe in the new school and sells coffee. If its okay to drink their coffee in the cafeteria why isnt it okay to drink everyone elses too? What happened to freedom of choice? This is purely a business decision and I cant stay quiet knowing the truth. The majority of my Mon-Friday traffic is faculty and students. In one fell swoop the powers that be have done irreparable damage to us. I know it most likely wasnt intentional because I know this town and the citizens that run it. But it may also be a fact that Whitsons wants to monopolize the market and they got the approval to do just that. So first the DECCA program can no longer sell snacks and raise money for students because of corporate greed. And sadly, the students and DECCA program suffered. And now their corporate grip is reaching outside the school and into my business...once again. Wonderful. But this time I dont know if we can bounce back. Whitsons contract will be up in a year and they could be gone but the damage to my business will be done. We donate so much to the Franklin Public Schools. We cant say NO to you, and I dont think we ever have and were happy to do it! We are a part of this community. We Love going to St. Roccos and knowing everyone there. Or picking apples at Fairmount Farms. For 20 years weve supported every one of your sport teams, honor society events, theatre programs, scholarship programs etc. And for all our support of the schools, this feels like the biggest slap in the face of our lives. After all our years, weve carried on through so much change, but we honestly dont know where we go from here. If you support us please Share this post or just let us know. Because right now my heart is broken. Some might say its business, not personal. Its not just business to us, it IS personal.
