This is indeed a dilemma but euthanasia as a preventive measure is surely not the answer: Letter to the Editor Orlando Sentinel Do something about bears Bears in the zoo are cute. Bears in the cartoons are funny. Bears roaming in my backyard after smashing down my solid-wood fence are neither cute nor funny. My wife and I have lived in Sweetwater Oaks in Seminole County for almost 30 years. We are well-informed about how not to encourage the bears. However, its not working. The situation is worse than ever and getting worse every day. Last month, a bear tore two holes in our backyard fence. It also damaged four of my neighbors fences on the same day. When I reported it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, I received a brochure about how to deal with the cuddly little fellows. There is no food in my backyard. We keep our trash in the garage. Once last year when we left the garage door open briefly, a bear came in and helped itself to the garbage can. I cant keep my garage door closed all the time. This has got to stop. The naturalists say development has displaced the bears. No, it hasnt. They are still living here in our neighborhood, which was permitted and approved by the county more than 40 years ago. The bears need to be euthanized or relocated. What are we waiting for — someone to be killed? John and Patricia Jones, Longwood
