This is interesting. A friend of mine who was a former scientist at NASA thinks that humanitys only hope, and the only hope for the ecosystem of the planet, lies in space colonization. He told me about Dan Savages Third Millennium, a stage by stage plan for humanity to eventually leave the planet Earth and colonize the asteroid belt, and then the stars. Colonization of the Oceans is a crucial step for this. It is like a dry run (or technically a wet run) for space colonization. An Ocean colony is like a space colony on training wheels. The environments of the Ocean and space have many similarities for human colonists. They are both hostile environments, they are both relatively weightless (you float in water, just as you would float in space), and they both require an oxygenated and pressurized environment. The main difference is that if something goes wrong underwater (or on water), its a lot easier to get back to shore rather than return to the surface of the planet.
