This is it. This is the original. The beginning scroll states this is a true story. Before the age of the Internet, which enables one to quickly fact check any statement as to validity, rumors were often treated as fact. This created an urban legend around this film. Leatherface and the very extreme concepts in this movie is based one the cannibal/killer Ed Gein. Silence of the Lambs and Psycho also get their inspiration from this true American horror story. This legend made this film a modern horror film classic. Leatherface is to chainsaws as Jason is to hockey masks. The film starts with the now classic eerie screeching music. This sets the mood. This film is a set piece for terror, claustrophobia, and extremes. Sally, her invalid brother Franklin, and friends are on an afternoon drive to revisit the old family homestead. As the friends travel, in a uber creepy van, there are reports on the radio about grave robbing and terrifying corpses set up crucifix style. Once on the road the van picks up the scariest hitchhiker in film history. The hiker begins to take pictures of Franklin and proceeds to cut him. The group wisely kicks the cretin out of the van and drive off. One by one members of the party begin to vanish. They all go to a neighboring house where they encounter Leatherface and are quickly dispatched one by one. Our heroes entrance is one of the best in film history, he slams a hammer down onto his victim and slams the door in frustration and anger. He kills a young lady later on by placing her on a meat hook. Even after all these years this scene is unsettling as I feel my flesh getting pierced by the sharp hook. As Leatherface kills his final victim he begins to freak out and run all over the house checking every window. What is remarkable about this sequence it shows one of the first examples of humor in a horror film. We see the frustrations and fear of a lunatic. Poor Leatherface. He truly hopes this is the end of people coming to his private residence. The next 10 minutes involve Sally and Franklin annoyingly shout and moan and groan. Then our hero thankfully dispatches the whiny irritable Franklin. I cheer every time this character dies. LF then chases the girl all over the place and she is captured by the father figure if the family. The cook comforts her and then begins to hit her over the head with a broom! He then lies and continues to tell the victim she will be ok. The dinner begins! This is where the claustrophobia of the movie starts. Leatherface and the Hitchhiker terrorize the girl, poke fun at her and threaten her. Amusingly, the cook says he doesnt enjoy killing. I always laugh when I think of a moral serial killer!
