This is meant as a follow up to Mikes recent post from the book of Daniel. As he points out so beautifully; we see the futility of trying to be worthy and avoiding the wrath of God in our own strength, or looking to the strength of other fallen men and as Daniel witnessed firsthand in the den there was an Advocate not of this world who came and stood between he in his fleshly weakness and that which would kill him. Daniel 6:22 My God sent his angel and shut the lions mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him... Though this account has clear Gospel overtones to it with regards to God sending His Son to stand between His wrath and our sinfulness; thereby removing our guilt and cancelling the penalty of death that was leveled against us there is one detail of this imperfect shadow that does not fully reflect the message of the Gospel, and that is the fact that the angel repelled the wrath of the lions, while Jesus was consumed by it. Isaiah 53:5-6 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (6) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. The angel held the lions at bay while Jesus was crushed, was torn asunder and ripped to shreds by the teeth of judgement upon our sin. He gave His life for us, stood between us and the Lion and bowed in acceptance of the wrath of God thus making peace by the Blood that He shed on Calvary. Colossians 1:18-22 (18) And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. (19) For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, (20) and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. (21) And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, (22) he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him. I love how Mike has pointed out yet again in this Christmas season where our hope lies, and how a Substitute has been sent by God to redeem and reconcile sinners to Himself through His Son. As wonderful as the birth is, we rejoice in His death for it is there that our victory is found! You are loved! Shon
