This is model journalism. Military hospitals -- separate from the troubled VA medical system -- have birth injury rates to newborns twice as high as civilian hospitals, twice the pressure point ulcers (bedsores) and post-operative hemorrhages (measures of patient injury). The wrong people are operated on and healthy organs are removed, patients with sepsis routinely treated incorrectly or turned away -- as the Pentagon higher ups in charge of patient injury audits are prevented from getting real statistics. These malpractices have been at a crisis point since 2001, when the Pentagon instigated patient injury audits routinely performed at civilian institutions. If I were teaching community journalism, I would teach the community how to work together to gather and analyze documents like these.
