This is much more than a nightmare. It is a harsh reality facing almost all American middle class expats. Not surprisingly, many long-term overseas US citizens are now seriously considering turning in their US passports for the first time and adopt new nationalities - something that most US expats had never seriously considered. Many naturalized American citizens who are currently living in their native countries are now reverting back to their original nationalities. They are doing so not to cheat on taxes but to escape severe harassment by the US government. Once upon a time, being an American citizen was something worthy of pride and worthy of envy by many non-Americans. Sadly, this is starting not to become the case. This development is both amazing and tragic for almost all concerned. This kind of alienation of Americas overseas citizens is likely to return negative dividends to the US in the long term - assuming that America still considers itself to be part of the global community.
