This is my 65 year old Landlady. A single woman, an ill husband, an old father. Runs the house and pretty much calls the shots everywhere. The discussion abuzz was the election-fever. If at all, the woman seem irresistibly excited about the prospect of voting in a few days. Kejriwal hi jeetega! She was an AAP loyalist. Jo insaan garibo ke madad karega, woh jeetega. Totally sure about Kejriwals victory and aware of his popularity, I learnt how a simple voting right makes a huge difference to the community. CNG Prices, Gas rates, UGC Pay Scales, Informal Sector reforms, Retail Prices, Corruption, Womens safety and rights, and the list goes on and on. From the housewife, to the auto-driver, from the shopkeeper to the businessman, the professional to the Expat, everyone is infected by this election fever. I felt ashamed for never taking my voting rights seriously. I asked her, Aapko nahi lagta, ek vote se kya ho jayega? Arrey, jab koi insaan 501 votes se jeeta tha, tab pata chali thi, ek vote ka matlab she replied crisply. Being a part of the largest democracy, I realized we should use our agencies to our best abilities. Instead of blaming the government, maybe a little more responsibility and interest in taking our rights seriously to choose the worst of the three (as many put it) might save us from a rainy day eventually. If a 65 year old woman seemed so excited and proactive about her rights, then slogan shouting, sociology aspirants, advocating human rights, modern thinking, consumerist youth like us should definitely take a shot. Maybe we can start from studying the agendas! To the Election-Fever-03
