This is my brave and noble Diablo, who died in my arms today with the assistance of our caring vet. He was welcomed into the arms of the Goddess in a ritual that I conducted last week to release his Spirit to her care. All of his fellow pack members were in attendance and came to bid him farewell in their own way, with whimpers and licks and mournful howls. He was holding his own in late stage kidney failure until last night, when he lost control of his bladder, stopped eating even his favorite tuna fish and started whimpering in pain. Then I knew the time had come for me to make that final hard decision that every pet owner takes on as part of the loving contract you establish when you adopt an animal. The time had come and the decision had to be made. I sang his favorite songs and made sure that mine was the last face he saw. Was it hard? Of course! But it was the final act of love between us.
