This is my homage to some great photographers who spent their valuable pixels at Drag March 2014. My own personal ritual and drag was captured by Saskia Scheffer, Peter Fahrni, Robert Croonquist, Jackie Rudin, Fannie Mae B. Free, Nina Resnick, Diane Green Lent, Jim Campbell, Mo Gelber and Steven Menendez. One of my reasons for manifesting faerie Sister Mary Juana as a combination of Mother Nature, the Divine Feminine and the Catholic Goddess herself was well, an excuse to focus on The Heart, that thing which binds us all together and sometimes gets forgotten in this strident Gay movement. It was a personal ritual to bring my recently deceased mother to Gay Pride. She never really embraced anything Gay, and always referenced the risk of AIDS and my lack of children (who would help me in my senior years). So, I began to think, better late than never, in my mind and heart, I decided this year I would attempt to make peace with Mom by bringing her to the drag march and showing her how wonderful my community is. The thought was that if I held her in my mind throughout this event, she would see what she was missing out on. Fanciful, I know, but it was a kind of personal payback, or attempt at opening up her shut down Catholic heart. At the end of the march, my dear friend Jason Baumann Montilla reminded me that this year, June 27th actually happens to be the Catholic Churchs holy feast of the Sacred Heart. I had no idea, but it seems that Mom was underscoring the Churchs mission by bringing it along with her to the Drag March. That joke was totally on me. My idea was not to bring along the sacred heart of Jesus, but my own heart, our collective queer heart. Well, there is a certain irony happening here. OK, Mom. I get it, but I hope you enjoyed the ride anyways. I certainly did. And thanks to the photographers mentioned above, I have some precious images. Thank you!
